My first ever post on this blog talked about what I call The Three Pillars of Health & Fitness, they are diet, exercise and sleep.
As a fitness trainer, I see that most people get the exercise part in order first, then concern themselves with diet and rarely if ever consider their sleeping patterns. Invariably when someone complains about lethargy, illness, lack of physical performance and so forth it is in the area of sleep that the problem lies (pardon the pun).
Getting a good night’s sleep is imperative if you want to live a long, healthy life. Short periods of sleep, broken sleep, interrupted sleep and insomnia can all lead to illness.
My prescription is simple: sleep for nine hours every night in a completely dark room. And try to retire and rise at the same time every day. Your body loves a good rhythm.
